There have been a number of interesting collaborations between musicians and the world of film in recent years, and some of them are certainly worth noting. For starters, shock rock king Marilyn Manson crafted the main theme to 2002's RESIDENT EVIL, a perfect music-to-movie match if there ever was one, even if it wasn't particularly memorable. The Nick Cave and Warren Ellis soundtracks for THE PROPOSITION and the Cormac McCarthy-inspired THE ROAD are much more noteworthy. But perhaps the strangest choice to score a major motion picture goes to Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood scoring THERE WILL BE BLOOD - a piece of work so staggering in its execution, that it was considered a strong favorite for Best Score at the 80th Academy Awards, until it was disqualified because of a designation within Rule 16 of the Academy's Special Rules for Movie Awards. Granted, this next film score hasn't even been heard yet at the time of this writing, but the pairing of director David Fincher and NIN frontman Trent Reznor in the upcoming SOCIAL NETWORK marks Reznor's first official foray into the world of film scoring, and it's high on the list of most anticipated soundtracks. The connection between Reznor and Fincher dates back to 1995, when Fincher famously used the remix to "Closer" in the title sequence in SE7EN; longtime NIN producer Atticus Ross - who scored THE BOOK OF ELI earlier this year - will also be involved.

Still, the one marriage of music to motion that all of us (well, geeks and uber-electronica fans anyway) are most excited for is the TRON: LEGACY score by Daft Punk. The neon world of enslaved programs and high speed lightcycles seems tailor-made for the robot motorcycle-helmeted French duo consisting of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter. But what if Daft Punk wasn't available, or just wasn't particularly interested in taking the job when TRON: LEGACY came calling? Surely, there are some other bands that could have come through in a pinch?

After the jump, you'll find five bands that GATW thinks could probably have pulled off the gig (audio included). (more...)

Just a month. I have to keep saying that to myself, or else my anticipation for the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival may get the better of me.

After the massive announcement of just about 50 films set to bow at the hotly-anticipated film festival, we have a few more to add to that bill, and boy is it a threesome.

According to Indie Wire, new films from documentary filmmakers such as Ondi Timoner, Errol Morris, and even Werner Herzog will be making their debut at the upcoming festival, making this year’s slate one of the more impressive collections of films in recent memory. (more...)

Talk about coming back from a break.

After taking just about a year off after winning the Oscar for his turn as Harvey Milk in Gus Van Sant’s fantastic and powerful film, MILK, Sean Penn not only has the film FAIR GAME on its way to theaters, and the start of production on his next role in Paolo Sorrentino’s upcoming thriller, THIS MUST BE THE PLACE, but THR is reporting he has a new film on the horizon.

The outlet is reporting that Penn will star in the upcoming adaptation of the A. Scott Berg novel, Max Perkins: Editor Of Genius, a film called GENIUS. Penn will star as Perkins, the literary editor of Scribners, who ultimately discovered and aided people like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway. (more...)

After the utterly fantastic indie gem that was WENDY AND LUCY, the last thing I expected director Kelly Reichardt to step out and do is an expertly crafted historical drama.

Well, based off our first look at the upcoming film, MEEK'S CUTOFF, that’s exactly what we got from the gifted up-and-coming filmmaker.

The film is based on the expedition made by Stephen Meek from Fort Laramie to Willamette Valley in 1845, which became one of the more infamous expeditions made during the era. The film stars Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Shirley Henderson, and Zoe Kazan, and our new glimpse at the film is completely breathtaking. We see Williams, Henderson, and Kazan in what looks like a really dark and barren landscape, which fits the production, one that had many of its cast and crew fall ill.  (more...)

A while back, it was announced that director David O. Russell was going to be adapting one of my favorite video game series, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, into a feature film. Although the game is already incredibly cinematic, many fans agree that an UNCHARTED film would be a great supplement.

Now the film's fate is a little more rocky, as Russell has left the project. (more...)

Traditionally, killer whales are symbols of longevity and romance since they are believed to mate for life. Hopefully, actors Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson - who are involved with the documentary THE WHALE and have been married since October of 2008 - will buck the Hollywood trend and stay together forever, too. GATW certainly wishes them the best.

Johansson, a.k.a. "ScarJo", is executive producing the killer whale documentary along with Eric Sesatnik, and we're guessing she had something to do with landing (in more ways than one) the film's narrator, Ryan Reynolds. Whale Johansson was surely one of the reasons the currently much in-demand actor signed on, it certainly didn't hurt that the emotional tail about a baby killer whale, nicknamed Luna, was set near Reynolds' hometown of Vancouver, British Columbia. I'M STILL HERE is a project shrouded half in mystery and half in Joaquin Phoenix craziness. From the outset of the project, there have been questions of its legitimacy, as its existence was more ridiculous than the actor-turned-rapper's announcement that he was retiring from show business. Followed by his declaration that he would instead be trying his hand at the hip-hop business, the entire thing was beginning to seem too crazy to be true.

Well, now we have our first piece of evidence that declares the Casey Affleck-directed documentary, I'M STILL HERE (originally named I'M STILL HERE: THE LOST YEAR OF JOAQUIN PHOENIX), and the entire drunken tale as truth. A poster. A rather good poster, in fact. The question now remains, will the footage that's soon to follow be as promising? Check it out after the jump.

    Kick-Ass Blu-ray

    Blu-ray: 3/5

Writers:Mark Millar & John Romita Jr. (comic book), Jane Goldman & Matthew Vaughn
    Director: Matthew Vaughn
Cast:Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz, Nicolas Cage, Mark Strong, Christopher Mintz-Plasse

KICK-ASS is a distinct film (yeah, I think having an 11 year old use the C-word falls under "distinct", it's fresh with freedom from not having the typical restraints you get with comic book superhero movies. And it would be very cool if the KICK-ASS Blu-ray had some fun, twisted surprises like the film itself; maybe containing goodies like coupons for switchblade lessons, or flashlights whose light comes out "shaped like a giant ____." Maybe I'm dreaming a little too big with those, but a desire for some creative features to go along with a unique film is what I'm subtly hinting at here. Unfortunately, the actual special features are not close to as out there or as awesome as those items previously mentioned, but they are decent overall, and the film does look nice under hi-def lights. Barry Munday film still

BARRY MUNDAY was the one movie at SXSW 2010 that made all my male friends extremely uncomfortable at just the mere thought of it. The comedy centers on a self-proclaimed lady’s man who loses his testicles in a bizarre accident and miraculously impregnates a woman he doesn’t remember having sex with. I can picture the winces and grimaces all over again.

I was one of the few that was able to see this film at SXSW, and now BARRY MUNDAY is finally coming to a theater near you later this year. But first it will appear on On Demand, Xbox Live, Playstation, Amazon, and Vudu, beginning on August 27, 2010. It opens in theaters on October.

An official poster for BARRY MUNDAY has just been released. You can check it out after the jump. It’s quite special.
