Paul Giamatti to replace Sean Penn in THE THREE STOOGES
After Sean Penn dropped out of THE THREE STOOGES, the role was vacant for a Larry in The Farrelly Brothers' big screen version of the classic short film and TV series that chronicled the misadventures of a trio of knuckleheads. Now it would appear that Paul Giamatti is stepping in to play the voice of reason in the zany trio. A bit of perfect casting, if you ask me. It was earlier reported that Jim Carrey was in line to play the child-like Curly, but it seems this may not be so now. As far as one can tell, Benicio Del Toro is still set to play the gruff and tumble Moe. With Carrey now potentially absent, all eyes are looking to who will be able to pull off the old blocking-two-fingers-in-the eyes routine. (My vote is for Iggy Pop. Everyone knows he is the one and true Stooge!)
But are any eyes really on this project? The idea of a THREE STOOGES film seems a little...well, silly to me. I'm afraid its vaudevillian type of humor is just too dated for these days. I know I for one am totally uninterested and would assume that, unless you are a die hard fan, most people would share in this disinterest. Not to mention the fact that The Farrelly Brothers have not had a truly good film since 1998's THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY or the moderately good ME, MYSELF AND IRENE. This just feels like it is going to be one of those Hollywood adaptations of a classic TV show that they pump a lot of money into and attach a few stars, only to have it fail miserably. Exhibit A, B, and C being BEWITCHED, THE DUKES OF HAZZARD, and LOST IN SPACE.
Leave LAND OF THE LOST out of this one! That one was an exception to the rule.
