Peter Berg confirms Smith, Theron, and Bateman for HANCOCK 2
In mid-August, we learned that director Peter Berg (FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS) was tossing around the idea of a follow up to his 2008 original superhero flick HANCOCK. Fast forward to the end of that month, HANCOCK 2’s writers were announced to be Adam Fierro (DEXTER) and Glen Mazzara (THE SHIELD). Then the obvious question arose. Would Will Smith, Charlize Theron, and Jason Batman return for the sequel? Well, it would seem the answer to that question is a definite yes. At least, that is what Berg is saying.
Berg announced the news at the Toronto International Film Festival, in a short but sweet statement. “Everybody’s going to come back for a sequel.”
But before you get your eagle beanie and bottle of Jack out in celebration, know this: there has yet to be a release date set by Sony Pictures, who released a statement concerning the film. According to them, things are not yet official on the sequel as the three actors have not signed their John Hancocks on the dotted line just yet.
Plot details surrounding HANCOCK 2 are being kept super secret, but Berg revealed that Smith and Theron will again play superheroes who lose their powers when near one another. That may cause one or two problems, seeing as how this time they must band together to fight an arch villain from the 3,000 year old super world they hail from. Batemen will return as Ray Embrey, former PR man to Hancock and husband to Theron’s character. Sony also revealed that the script has yet to be finalized, so this plot line could very well change over time.
Despite grossing $624 million world wide, HANCOCK met luke warm to negative reviews upon its release. So this presents the question, do you even care or want to see a sequel? I for one somewhat enjoyed the original, for the sheer fact that it was a comic book style film that was not actually adapted from a comic book. I also enjoyed Will Smith in the role, as a crass, alcoholic superhero that really didn’t care about being a superhero. I think where the film went wrong for most people most was the plot involving Hancock’s past with Charlize Theron’s character. Thoughts?
