It is being reported that Disney is close to striking a deal with Rob Marshall that would make him the new captain of the ship that is the fourth PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, which would put that vessel on a course to reach the land of production in the year 2010. Disney hopes to find a director and strike a deal soon, in order to have Johnny Depp return as the debonair Captain Jack Sparrow before he goes off to play the sidekick, Tonto, in the film version of THE LONE RANGER.

This genre of film, that being action adventure, is a departure for Marshall, who is best known for being the award-winning director behind the musical CHICAGO, as well as MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA (OR HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE SLEEPING DURING MOVIES). Marshall is currently in the post-production stage on his next film NINE, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, based on a vintage script from iconic Italian Federico Fellini. NINE centers around Guido Contini, a character featured in Fellini's classic and stylish 8 1/2, making the film somewhat of a sequel/spin-off.

The franchise's previous director Gore Verbinski declared parlay on a fourth PIRATE film after he was asked to helm the video game-to-film adaptation of the very popular BIOSHOCK. Unfortunately for Verbinski, that is a project that has since been put on hiatus, causing him to seek other films.

Yarrr you still interested in more PIRATES films or is that a ship that set sail for you long ago with DEAD MAN'S CHEST? Personally, I enjoy watching Depp in the role of Sparrow so much that I say a fourth film is a treasure to be spread amongst all us scallywags.
