Poster and trailer for THE LAST SONG
I've held out on you long enough. I did not want to post the trailer for the second of two Nicholas Sparks' film adaptations we're getting next year (the first being DEAR JOHN, hitting screens in February) because I wanted to spare your eyes, your hearts, your ears, and any residual feelings you may have for Greg Kinnear. But, with the arrival of THE LAST SONG's official poster today, I could hold out no longer. I will attempt to be objective.
Hit the jump to see the full poster, the trailer, and my thoughts on the whole she-bang. Please, prepare yourselves.

THE LAST SONG is standard Sparks stuff - Miley Cyrus (MY EARS! Um, sorry) stars as Ronnie Miller (not to be confused with our awesome Austin correspondent), an angry teenager or something of that ilk. Ronnie and her little brother (played by Bobby Coleman, easily the star of the trailer) are shipped off to spend the summer with their estranged dad (inexplicably played by Kinnear), thanks to their divorced mom (Kelly Preston). Ronnie has issues with her dad, but they begin to connect over a shared love of music and Ronnie's summer romance with Will (Chris Hemsworth's little brother, Liam).
There's some stuff about Ronnie not going to Julliard, and trying to get their parents back together, and a lot of crap on the beach and running and stones and rain and making out in cars, and phew - basically any cliche you've ever seen in a Sparks book or film is present here. Except, this time, with Miley Cyrus.
The poster makes Miley look confused and wonky-eyed, while also giving a celestial glow to Hemsworth usually only ascribed to angels. Wait! Is Hemsworth really an angel? Plot twist! Anyway, Cyrus also toddles around the bottom of the poster in a sweater that looks like it has been straight-up cribbed from Meryl Streep's wardrobe in IT'S COMPLICATED. Also, the "tagline" of the film has randomly assigned capitalization, like one of those weird Blue Mountain Arts cards they sell at my carwash.
THE LAST SONG will be in theaters on April 2, 2010. I hate to make plans that far in advance, but I'm willing to say I probably won't be there.
