Poster for EXTRAORDINARY MEASURES
Once every month or so, my mother will call and tell me, “I just saw a trailer for a film I’ve never heard of.” You can imagine, being the mother of a film blogger, a voracious pop culture consumer herself, and a very frequent movie-goer, when Leslie says she hasn’t heard of something before, it’s because no one else has heard of it. A couple of months ago, it was BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT (sorry about that one, Michael Douglas). Today’s case in point is something called EXTRAORDINARY MEASURES. Same deal, a boringly titled film starring a couple of big names that, as best I can tell, no one has any awareness of.
EXTRAORDINARY MEASURES stars Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser and is based on the book of the same name by Geeta Anand. Fraser plays John Crowley, a real-life American biotechnology executive and entrepreneur. Crowley and his wife Aileen (to be played in the film by Keri Russell) made their mark on the biotech game after he became CEO of Novazyme, a biotech company that was researching experimental treatments for Pompe Disease. But this isn’t just another story about a guy getting a high-power job, Fraser was interested in the position because he and Aileen’s two youngest children actually have Pompe Disease. Ford will be starring as another doctor in the film.

While the poster itself is boring me to near tears, EXTRAORDINARY MEASURES seems like a film that could have real heart and depth. The film is not to be confused with 1996’s Hugh Grant-starring EXTREME MEASURES (am I the only one who remembers that flick?).
EXTRAORDINARY MEASURES will be in theaters on January 22, 2010.
