Competition is heating up in the DVD rental world. A few days ago, I gave you the rundown on Blockbuster’s iPhone app that lets you conveniently browse and search their entire catalog and add movies into your queue, all while eating a delicious 700 calorie cheeseburger from Sonic (my jaw dropped when I looked up the calorie count). After a small handful of third party apps, Redbox has finally released their official app – which is free – and will now give Blockbuster (also free) a run for its money. Where you at, Netflix?

Read on to see the list of features for the Redbox app.

    HOMEPAGE

Your homepage lists the newest releases. If you scroll down, you can see the films that were released in the weeks before. At the top there is a scroll bar where you’re able to scroll through the genres. Pick one, and it’ll list the new releases in that genre.

    SEARCH

At the top right of the homepage is the search feature. This lets you search Redbox entire catalog of films. For this article, I’ve searched DISTRICT 9. When the film pulls up, I’m given the GENRE, CAST, PLOT, RATING, RUNNING TIME, and RESERVE.

    RESERVE

After I select RESERVE, a list of Redbox locations in my area are pulled up. I pick where I want to pick up the DVD, put in my credit card information and a copy of DISTRICT 9 will be waiting for me at my location. I’m given 24 hours to pick up the DVD. I also having the option of saving my location for future searches and rentals.

One thing I’ve noticed about Redbox lately is there are now people lining up at these places to rent movies. It’s fast, local, and convenient. Since its popularity is rapidly growing, the RESERVE feature on this app makes it worth it to download. You can get it HERE. Cheers!
