Rob Marshall confirmed as the director of PIRATES 4
Back in July we heard rumors of Rob Marshall's possible involvement in the continuing PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN franchise, but now those rumors are confirmed. The director of movies like the Academy Award-winning CHICAGO and the upcoming NINE will be taking a step away from his musical roots towards a swashbuckling action film.
The news was confirmed by Marshall himself during a Q&A. When asked about what he would be working on after NINE, this is what he had to say:
"Y'know, it's something that I was offered and never in the world thought I would do but then I was like 'why not?'...I'm doing PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN."
The question now is whether his involvement is a good or a bad thing?
I might be the wrong person to answer that question, since my emotional interest in the franchise waned with each sequel, but I do know a thing or two about musical theater. That's a genre that is all about pacing and energy, and hopefully those are elements that Marshall can bring over to PIRATES 4.
Of course, looking at MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA, his previous departure from the world of musicals, it makes you wonder whether the guy has any other genres in him. That movie was dull and boring, two qualities that will not go over well in a PIRATES film.
