Robert De Niro to play Bernie Madoff in HBO movie?

HBO has secured the rights to Diane Henrique’s recent non-fiction book, The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and the Death of Trust, and with Robert De Niro and Jane Rosethal on to produce it through their Tribeca Productions shingle, it looks like De Niro may be a lock to play Madoff himself.

Henrique’s book hit shelves on April 26 and is expected to debut on the The New York Times bestseller list this weekend. It’s described as “the definitive look at Madoff and his $65 billion Ponzi scheme.” De Niro is apparently in negotiations for the role of Madoff. While most people will probably comment that De Niro resembles Madoff enough to play him, there’s also a certain inscrutability to Madoff that I think De Niro could pull off quite well. De Niro’s talents are superlative at this point, and Madoff and his story are complicated enough to warrant a performance by a true thespian.

You can read an excerpt from Henrique's book on her website right HERE. The book also features "shocking new details" from Madoff, so at the very least, it's got a much more comprehensive look at the story than what most of the public has been privy to as of yet and should make for some pretty compelling cinema.
