Rodriguez out of THE JETSONS, Segal in?
Back when the days were longer, we told you about Robert Rodriguez's plans to shoot a live-action version of "The Jetsons," one of my favorite Hanna-Barbera creations. Well, it appears those plans are no more.
There is no doubt that Rodriguez is a busy man these days - he currently has MACHETE in post-production, and PREDATORS in the works, as well as SPY KIDS 4. There are even rumors that SIN CITY 2 could begin filming as soon as next year.
All hope is not lost for THE JETSONS, though, as it appears Peter Segal is being considered to step in to fill Rodriguez's shoes. According to Pajiba, Warner Brothers approved the script but weren’t able to get the project off the ground, "partly because no talent wanted to sign on, including Jim Carrey, who passed on the role of George Jetson."
Those factors, coupled with the disappointing returns for SHORTS, seemed to have forced the director to abandon THE JETSONS and probably shift his focus to one of the other projects he’s been developing.
Feelings are mixed about Peter Segal's proposed involvement with this project. Segal's previous works include GET SMART, THE LONGEST YARD, 50 FIRST DATES, TOMMY BOY, and NAKED GUN 33 1/3: THE FINAL INSULT. Just yesterday, he was rumored to be looking to direct DIRTY OLD MEN, starring Morgan Freeman. His body of work is definitely interesting, and I am curious to see what he could bring to THE JETSONS.
What are your thoughts? Are you in favor of Peter Segal's replacement of Robert Rodriguez? Who would you cast as George Jetson?
