Roy Disney dead at 79
Roy E. Disney, son of Roy O. Disney and nephew of Walt Disney, the co-founders of the Walt Disney Company, has died at the age of 79. Disney is best known as a skilled businessman who led shareholders in the ousting of two top Disney executives: Ron Miller in 1984, and Michael Eisner in 2005.
Roy Disney began working in the family business at a young age as an editor, screenwriter, and producer. Two short films he worked on were nominated for Academy Awards: 1959′s MYSTERIES OF THE DEEP which he wrote, was nominated as best live action short, and 2003′s DESTINO which he co-produced, was nominated as best animated short.
It was his commitment to creativity that prompted him to lead the revolts that led to the ousting of the company’s chief executives and the revival of the studio’s legendary animation unit. His work made it possible for such iconic films as THE LITTLE MERMAID, ALADDIN, and THE LION KING to be created.
Disney, who had been battling stomach cancer, died at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach earlier today.
