Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden are a phenomenal writing and directing team that tend to write and direct films that tell real and haunting stories (their previous credits include HALF NELSON and SUGAR). As Chase told us back in June, their next project to tackle will be an adaptation of the young adult novel, IT'S KIND OF A FUNNY STORY, written by Ned Vizzini. This adaptation has now acquired an $8 million budget, which is in the same range as Fleck and Boden's previously small budgets.

FUNNY STORY is a "coming-of-age dramedy" that centers on a 15 year old that goes to the crazy house for his overwhelming depression. Instead of being placed in the youth ward, he is placed among the adults, where he meets interesting, and often funny, individuals. IT'S KIND OF A FUNNY STORY sounds like it is right up Fleck and Boden's alley, and I cannot wait to see the great colorful characters that will grace the screen within. Word is, unknowns will be cast as the main character and his love interest, and big names are being looked at for the supporting cast. This is one project that has me truly excited. Look out, film festivals, Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden are back.
