• Sean Bean and Dougray Scott will saddle up for MAGNIFICENT SEVEN remake

In reality, there won’t be much saddling up, let alone horses, in this remake of the classic 1960s Western. Instead, this unconventional redux will center around a group of UK soccer players who wear a different type of boot. Their team name? That’s right, partner! It’s the Cowboys, “a struggling local amateur soccer team” while “the Indians run a nearby Tandoori restaurant and the bandits are a group of menacing thugs led by a maniac known simply as ‘Blonde Bob’.”

The film will be directed by Irvine Welsh (author of “Trainspotting”) and has lassoed Sean Bean (LORD OF THE RINGS), Dougray Scott (MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2) and original MAGNIFICENT SEVEN cast member Robert Vaughn to star.

If your memory serves you correctly, you may recall that even THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, about seven gunfighters defending a Mexican village, was a remake/retooling of Akira Kurosawa’s renowned epic, SEVEN SAMURAI. So, while the idea of morphing a Western into a film about cleverly named soccer teams may make you holler “What in tarnation?”, it seems to me to better than a carbon copy remake. After all, isn’t that what the true point of a remake should be? To say something new, or explore new territory, with old material?

Not to mention, who knows what kind of grittiness we are in for with Welsh at the helm?
