The film adaptation of the video game SILENT HILL has a special place in my heart. It is the movie that my wife and I watched on our first date (I made sure we watched a scary movie so I could hold her tight – that trick actually works). The film definitely had its flaws, but I was somewhat impressed; it was certainly decent as far as video game adaptations go. The domestic box office total, according to Box Office Mojo, came in at $46,982,632. Worldwide, the film totaled $97,607,453. That’s double the film’s $50 million budget, and that’s definitely not too bad when you take the film’s rating and genre into consideration. With such profit, I expected a sequel to arise, but nothing did. That is, until now.

Screenwriter Roger Avary (PULP FICTION) and producer Samuel Hadida of the first film have officially signed on for the sequel. Actress Radha Mitchell spoke about a possible SILENT HILL sequel back in April, with Dread Central.

“I think they’re kicking it around, but I don’t think Christophe (Gans, director of the original) is attached, which is a shame. He’s a nutter but he’s so passionate about the game. I think he should do it if they do it again. I’m sure they will, but I’m not sure what incarnation it will be. I want to come back as a monster or some crazy creature!”

It sounds to me like the woman is interested in returning for one more. RESIDENT EVIL 4 is the next project up on Davis Films, but the plans are to return to SILENT HILL next year when that wraps. The gears are turning, and the parts are coming together for a SILENT HILL 2. As more information on this project surfaces, we will let you in on the know.

    • I thought they did a really good job, particularly with lighting and colors, to give the first film a very creepy feel. However, I took issue with the fact that so much of it was clearly cribbed right from the video games - every location had a mission-based feel - "now we have to go to the school, now we have to go to the church, now we have to go to the hotel," that made it often feel tedious. I was not into the climax, but I liked the ending.
    • They did pretty good for the most part of the movie, getting the feel and idea of the game. However, the climax and ending were pretty dumb, but the movie was still much better than Resident Evil could ever hope to be.

I think the RE movies are pretty horrible as far as game adaptations go, but pretty bad even if you don't factor that in. So hopefully they can fine tune what they attempted with the first one, and make a good sequel.
