  • SOMEWHERE and IT’S KIND OF A FUNNY STORY get new release dates; STORY to feature music by Broken Social Scene

Thanks to Focus Features, we now know when we will be finally able to check out two of this year’s more highly anticipated releases.

The studio has updated their schedule, which includes the upcoming Sofia Coppola film, SOMEWHERE, set for a December 22 premiere, as well as the Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden drama, IT'S KIND OF A FUNNY STORY, now set to open curtains on September 24.

SOMEWHERE marks the return of Sofia Coppola, and is set to follow up her brilliant take on the life of Marie Antoinette.  It follows a Hollywood star who lives at the Chateau Marmont, only to have his life changed by his 11 year old daughter who comes to visit.  The film stars Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning, and is not only one of my most anticipated films of the year, but has been since Coppola’s 2006 film, MARIE ANTOINETTE.

IT'S KIND OF A FUNNY STORY is another much talked about film, and is Fleck and Boden’s adaptation of the Ned Vizzini novel of the same name.  It follows a young teen who goes into a mental institution, only to find that he’s been placed in the adult ward.  HALF NELSON and SUGAR not only proved that these two are massively gifted filmmakers, but that they also truly know how to tell a genuinely moving story.  However, that doesn’t end all of the news coming out of that camp.

According to the Aquarian Weekly (via The Playlist), the film will not only mark the latest outing from Fleck and Boden, but will also feature a score including new tracks from massively popular and massively awesome Canadian mega-group, Broken Social Scene.  THE MOVIE IS BROKEN (a film surrounding a BSS concert) premiered at this year's SXSW Film Festival, they just released a new record, and they're working on projects including DAYDREAM NATION.  Not only will this be an epic year for the band, but for fans of good film and good music blended, this could not be a better situation.

Thank you Focus Features, thank you.
