STAR WARS television series 3-5 years from happening

It's no secret that the STAR WARS television series that we were once promised many years ago has hit a wall, keeping it from production. A couple of weeks ago, we got word that there was already at least 50 hours of content written, but the big issue was finding a way to make what was written on a television budget.

Now we are getting a little more clarification about the budgetary issues, and some plot information about the show. This quote comes from producer Rick McCallum about the show, which is supposed to be filmed in the Czech Republic:

"The TV series is on hold, but that has nothing to do with the Czech Republic; it has to do with [the episodes being] so ambitious…We have 50 hours of third-draft scripts, but the problem we have is there is a lot of digital animation; we don’t have the technology yet to be able to do them at a price that is safe for television. Since we would be financing them, it would be suicide for us to do this [now]. So we are going to wait three or four years."

This quote supplements a lot of information that we already knew about the show, but it tells us a little bit about where the scripts actually are in production. The technology angle does make a lot of sense, and we can only hope that they can find a way to produce the show sooner rather than later. If anyone would be able to do it, it would be Lucas and company.

The next interesting bit we got from McCallum is about the actual premise of the show, something that had been pretty under wraps:

"Basically, it is like THE GODFATHER; it’s the Empire slowly building up its power base around the galaxy, what happens in Coruscant, which is the major capital, and it’s [about] a group of underground bosses who live there and control drugs, prostitution."

This is a very interesting concept for the show, and takes it not only in a direction that seems ripe for television, but a direction that would be fascinating to see. The show is set to take place in between the two trilogies, which is a perfect time for this plot to take place, as much of the universe is in upheaval.

I love the premise of the show, it has potential to do something really interesting with the series. What do you guys think?
