Once upon a time, Steve Guttenberg was one of the it-boys of Hollywood, but apparently not even the Stonecutters could keep him famous forever. His hot 1980s comedy career has dwindled significantly, but it seems that he is setting up a comeback! How? The Hollywood way: sequels. In an interview with The Sun, Guttenberg gave some details about a couple of upcoming projects.

“We are doing a new [POLICE ACADEMY movie] and it is going to be great fun… A script is being written and so far it is really great, everyone from the original movies who is still around will return.”

“Everyone” is returning and that may include SEX AND THE CITY star Kim Cattrall and Sharon Stone, who Guttenberg claims “have been asked but they haven’t said yes yet.” As if that weren’t enough, He has a second project in the works!

“Tom Selleck, Ted Danson and I are looking to make another THREE MEN AND A BABY movie. It’s called THREE MEN AND A BRIDE. The script is pretty much written and we are really keen to get that made. We’re very hopeful.”

I like Steve Guttenberg. I grew up on POLICE ACADEMY and I still remember my cousins and me watching the “ghost” in the window of THREE MEN AND A BABY over and over again. Most recently, I had hoped his great run on season 2 of ‘Veronica Mars’ would jump-start his career, but it wasn’t meant to be. I’d love to see these projects get off the ground, but I’m concerned that there isn’t much of an audience left for either of these movies. There were seven (Guttenberg left after the fourth) POLICE ACADEMY movies, which were followed by a short-lived TV series. It’s possible that the franchise has outlived its welcome. I’m not sure how well another THREE MEN movie would do, but I love the idea of making the baby into a young bride twenty-something years after the original. Reminds me of the FATHER OF THE BRIDE movies, which I liked a lot.
