Steven Spielberg wants to bring Stephen King’s UNDER THE DOME to TV
The other day I saw a commercial for Stephen King’s new book “Under the Dome” and for the first 15 seconds I thought it was a trailer for an actual movie. I guess that’s both a credit to the marketing team and King’s ability to write books that translate well to visual mediums.
I think Spielberg understand this as well, as he understands the power of television. His miniseries, like “Taken” and “Band of Brothers,” have been brilliant and it looks like he wants to delve into the format once more to bring King’s “Under the Dome” to television.
The plot of the book is a brilliant one. It deals with the small town of Chester’s Mill, Maine, which “is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener’s hand is severed as ‘the dome’ comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when — or if — it will go away.”
I can already see the story playing out on my plasma TV. Dreamworks and Spielberg have optioned the book and are looking for writers before they shop the project around. Hopefully it won’t be long before it goes into production since two such high-profile names are attached to it.
