  • SXSW 2009 Review: BEST WORST MOVIE

    by:

    Rating: 9/10

    Director: Michael Paul Stephenson

Imagine this: you’re a young boy and you get your big break into the film world by starring in a movie.  A dream come true, right?  Now imagine being a young boy and you get your big break in a film that will later be deemed the worst film ever made--  only to turn into a cult classic a mere 20 years later.  Your dream is now a nightmare.  Quite the mindfuck.  Someone needs to get this story out to the unacquainted public.

Leave that up to Michael Paul Stephenson, who took the cinema law into his own hands by creating one of the best documentaries of 2009, appropriately titled BEST WORST MOVIE. A film about the wonderful, horrible life after starring in the worst movie ever made, TROLL 2 (which has no relation to trolls or the original).

The film follows Mr. Stephenson- who played Josh Waits in TROLL 2 -on his journey to find all cast members from the original film, while making pit stops in locations (including Austin) of the world where fans from all over gather to watch the unexpected phenomenon.  Joining him is George Hardy, the father in TROLL 2 whose character wasn’t a fan of little Josh pissing on hospitality.  George, who took a break from his life as an oral surgery practician in a small town in Alabama, is the heart and soul of this film. After almost 20 years of the film's release, this is the only actor who was unaffected by the baggage that came with TROLL 2.  If you watch our interview with him (see below), you'll find out exactly when his involvement with TROLL 2 finally affected him.

Mr. Stephenson's heartbreaking look on what everyone had to go through post TROLL 2 is simply astounding.  I'm looking forward to what his hungry, storytelling mind has in store for us.  So show him some hospitality and see BEST WORST MOVIE.

Check out our interviews below with Michael Paul Stephenson, George Clardy, Darren Ewing, Jason Steadman, and two trolls that were eager to make Gordon and the Whale one less short of a member.
