INGLORIOUS BASTERDS is on many a 2009 top ten list and, with that, Quentin Tarantino is getting lot of press on his response. After BASTERDS, many speculated that Tarantino’s next film project would be a prequel to the story. While Tarantino says he is working on writing a prequel (he has 40 pages completed so far), in a recent interview with New York Magazine’s Vulture blog, Tarantino hinted that his next film would be of a “different genre entirely.”

Tarantino’s next film will be “smaller, less epic” than BASTERDS. He is confident that he can finish it in a five to six month period of intensive writing. Though Tarantino had the idea for BASTERDS for about 10 years, it only took him a few weeks to write the film.

The interview doesn’t elaborate as to what the new film will be about, but their are plenty of rumors and speculation where Tarantino’s upcoming films are concerned. A simple Google search will result in a host of information, but there is no telling how factual that information actually is. According to The Playlist, it could be any of the following:

    -1930s gangster picture
    -a spaghetti western
    -southern KKK revenge tale
-the adaptation of Len Deighton’s British spy novels, potentially with Simon Pegg
    -his John Brown slavery film

The Playlist also has a list of Tarantino movies that never happened that could be in the running as well. One thing is for certain, the next film won’t be KILL BILL 3. Tarantino nixed that idea back in November. I guess, for now, we will have to be patient and have a little fun with all the speculation. After all, isn’t Tarantino worth the wait?

It is also worth mentioning that, in the Vulture interview, Tarantino discusses the German and Israeli response to INGLORIOUS BASTERDS, which is definitely worth its own read.
