Disney is back in my good graces now that there is finally a Disney princess that looks like me.  I haven’t seen THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG yet, but I’ve waited twentysome-odd years for this and will definitely be seeing it very soon. And just as my opinion was turning around for Disney, they had to go and do one of the biggest cash grabs in recent memory. Michael Jackson’s 1986 3D film CAPTAIN EO is returning to Disneyland in February of 2010 for a limited engagement. In all honesty, I am pleased that the movie is returning to Disneyland.  Now I have a big incentive to get myself to Disneyland because it’s been too long and I need a new set of mouse ears anyway.

The return of CAPTAIN EO has been rumored since September and I can’t say that this is entirely unexpected with the success of THIS IS IT and the pop star’s untimely death in June of this year. My only hope is that the Jackson estate will see some profit from this because last time I checked they could use it. Oh, but I kid.  Last time I checked, it was valued at 500 million dollars, so I doubt anyone is starving over there.

Captain EO was directed by Francis Ford Coppola and executive produced by George Lucas. The film starred Michael Jackson as the title character who leads a ragtag crew on a mission in space to deliver a gift to a wicked alien queen, the Supreme Leader, played by Anjelica Huston.

The 17-minute film cost about one million dollars per minute of film, making it the most expensive motion picture of all time (minute per minute). According to Wikipedia:

“Two new songs appeared in the film. The first, is an early version of ‘Another Part of Me.’ The song was re-mixed and later appeared on Jackson’s hugely successful Bad album. It was released as a single in 1988.  The song also makes a brief appearance in the movie ‘Rush Hour’ in which Chris Tucker mimics Captain EO after blowing up a car.  ‘We Are Here to Change the World’ was not officially released until 2004 as part of Michael Jackson: The Ultimate Collection. This version however, is not the same version heard in the film. Soul/R&B singer Deniece Williams covered the song on her As Good As It Gets album.”

Captain EO will return to Tomorrowland at the Disneyland Resort beginning in February 2010.
