Theatrical cut of LORD OF THE RINGS coming to Blu-ray in April
There is good and bad news for anyone who was saving room on their Blu-ray shelf for Peter Jackson’s LORD OF THE RINGS. The good news: it finally has a release date, April 6, 2010. The bad news: we’re still not getting the extended editions.
Of course, this means we’re closer than ever to a Blu-ray release of the extended cuts. Back in July, Peter Jackson told Collider that “the first editions to hit Blu-ray are going to be the theatrical versions and a year later we’d get the extended editions.” So now that the first part has come true, we can hopefully expect the longer versions to arrive in the first half of 2011.
For those of you who can’t wait an extra year, this is what you’ll be getting with your purchase:
“The nine-disc set, priced at $99.98, will contains the original theatrical versions of the three Peter Jackson-directed Rings films—The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002) and The Return of the King (2003)—along with more than seven hours of special features. The supplemental package will contain mostly special features that were on the various DVD versions of the movies, including featurettes that were originally on LordOfTheRings.net. However, the Blu-ray versions will offer high-def trailers. The set also will include digital copies of each film and have BD Live access. Prebook date is March 2.”
Personally, I can’t see myself buying the theatrical cuts, so I’m gonna wait, but you can pre-order your copy now. Amazon has it listed for only $69!
