Tony Award-winner Donna Murphy joins Disney’s RAPUNZEL

Two-time Tony Award-winning actress Donna Murphy has joined the cast of the Disney animated musical RAPUNZEL. Murphy will be the voice of Mother Gothel, a witch who holds Rapunzel captive in a tower. Pop singer/actress Mandy Moore is confirmed to be the voice of Rapunzel, while Zachary Levi of “Chuck” fame will be her prince.
RAPUNZEL is a reimagining of the fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, in which a girl with the magical hair is taken from her parents as child and locked away in a tower. She escapes with the help of a prince who uses her hair as a ladder to gain access to the tower.
Byron Howard and Nathan Greno are directing the animated feature. The two worked together on 2008’s BOLT, with Byron Howard as co-director and Nathan Greno as head of story.
This is Murphy’s first time working in animation. Murphy won Tonys as Best Actress in a Musical for “Passion” and “The King and I.” She has been seen on screen in SPIDER-MAN 2, THE NANNY DIARIES, and CENTER STAGE, just to name a few.
One thing to be excited about is the music in this film, as the movie will feature music by Alan Menken. Menken’s Academy Award-winning compositions include “Under the Sea” from THE LITTLE MERMAID, “A Whole New World” from ALADDIN,” the title song from BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, and “Colors of the Wind” from POCAHONTAS. His screen credits also include LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, ROCKY V, NEWSIES, THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, and ENCHANTED.
RAPUNZEL will be presented in 3D and should see a release next year.
