Tony Scott brings the Chippendales to the big screen
Tony Scott is best known for his action and thriller films like MAN ON FIRE and TOP GUN, but for his next project he’s doing something a little different. Scott is planning to produce and direct a movie about the life of Steve Banerjee, the man who created the wildly successful Chippendale nightclubs during the 1980s. These clubs featured all-male dancers, and if you’ve ever seen the classic SNL Chris Farley sketch, then you know what I’m talking about.
The film, however, will contain some darker elements aside from the hunky male strippers. Although he became a wealthy man from his nightclubs, Banerjee grew paranoid to the point where he hired a hitman to kill his choreographer. He died in jail before being sentenced. This is the part of the story that probably got Tony Scott interested in making the film and it’s what’s got me excited for the project.
Scott is a lot better than movies like THE TAKING OF PELHAM 1 2 3 would have you believe. Perhaps a biopic is just what he needs to stretch his creative muscle. The script will be adapted from a Rodney Sheldon manuscript by Lisa Schrager, but don’t expect to see this any time soon. He’s currently directing the action movie, UNSTOPPABLE, and a look at his IMDb page shows he’s gonna be busy for a while.
