• Trailer for SXSW favorite MONSTERS hits

When I attended SXSW back in March, I came to the festival with a little bit of knowledge surrounding each film I planned to attend. Most of the movies I was looking forward to had posters and a few even had trailers. However, one film left me completely in the dark. All I had to go on was the title- MONSTERS.

That movie went on to become one of my favorite movies of the festival. You can check out my review here and you can check out the trailer, after the jump.

MONSTERS is one of those movies that has grown on me with time. I’ve cited its audacity countless times since that first viewing. I’ve referenced it as one of the most beautiful and sincere love stories I’ve seen in a genre movie. Perhaps that’s why I’m so confused about this trailer. It looks like they’re marketing the film as a monster movie; the trailer makes MONSTERS out to be a film about monsters. In reality, it’s a movie about love blooming in the unlikeliest of settings- this time in an alien infested Mexico.

In fact, the fact that aliens inhabit the area serves as a modicum for danger rather than the crux of the story. Our focus in this film is entirely on these two characters. The marketing for this film, so long as it continues down the path of emphasizing the film’s limited action scenes, can only work to inspire disappointment in audiences. Hopefully we’ll see more trailers and posters that highlight the tremendously well crafted love story that runs throughout the film.

    1. I agree – this trailer is misleading. This movie is so much moving than this alludes to.
