UP IN THE AIR screenwriter to make directorial debut
This year's Academy Awards had its fair share of snubs and victories. One of the more surprising upsets at the Oscars came when movie blogger favorite, UP IN THE AIR, narrowly avoided winning a single Academy Award. Naturally, this was a pretty big surprise as it was leading a lot of predictions coming out of the early award season.
One of the more notable upsets where UP IN THE AIR didn't win as expected was the Best Adapted Screenplay category. The nominee, Sheldon Turner, looks to be getting his just desserts here as he's signed on to direct his first feature. More information on this project, and my highly desired opinion, after the jump.
According to Variety, Sheldon Turner's first film will be BY VIRTUE FALL, adapted from an original screenplay that he wrote himself. This story, which is actually the first script that Turner wrote, is summed up quite succinctly by Variety:
The project revolves around a man who is framed by his mentor and winds up in prison. Once released, he's fixated on getting revenge on his former partner, who has flourished in his new life and tried to cleanse himself of the past.
Sound generic to you? Perhaps. But that isn't necessarily a bad thing in my opinion. At least once a month, we're treated to a film that's well made but doesn't tell a very original story. I'm thinking of GREEN ZONE or 2008's BODY OF LIES. These films aren't exactly showing us something that we've never seen before. However, they don't have all that many evident flaws.
For obvious reasons, I see this project turning out a lot like those. An acceptable film that doesn't seek to break genre conventions or break $100 million at the box office. However, we're looking at an Oscar nominated team here with Sheldon Turner as the writer/director and a few members of the production team behind THE HURT LOCKER.
