• Venice Film Festival announces lineup; where is TREE OF LIFE?

Coming just a day after the announcement of the upcoming Toronto Film Festival’s lineup, those behind the Venice Film Festival appear to want to take the limelight back, and have announced one hell of a lineup for the 67th year of the festival.

According to Ion Cinema, films like THE TEMPEST, BLACK SWAN, and the recently announced MACHETE will be joined by films from Sofia Coppola (SOMEWHERE), Julian Schnabel (MIRAL), and even Vincent Gallo, who will be premiering his new film, PROMISES WRITTEN IN WATER. Other interesting announcements include MEEK’S CUTOFF from director Kelly Reichardt, whose film WENDY AND LUCY is still one of my favorite films of the past few years. Cult director/auteur Monte Hellman returns with his new film, ROAD TO NOWHERE, starring Dustin Hoffman and Paul Giamatti as well.

The full lineup awaits, after the break.

While this announcement may not have the numbers of the announcement for the Toronto Film Festival, there is definite quality behind this list. I will not be at this festival, as I will be for the Toronto fest, but I’m still really interested in seeing the response to a lot of these bigger, more anticipated projects. That said, where the hell is TREE OF LIFE? Is this a sign that we won’t be seeing the film this year? I’m going to go out on a limb and say that we won’t be seeing it at all this year, and honestly, I would be shocked if we see it within the next 365 days, until this time next year. Just a hunch.
