I really tried hard to make the headline read like tabloid fodder. How did I do, reading public? To me, Helen Mirren and Joe Pesci are an unlikely duo. Pesci's all GOODFELLAS, 8 HEADS IN A DUFFEL BAG, and CASINO, and Helen has played a queen something like six times.

Helen's new role in LOVE RANCH sees her doing things we wouldn't expect from such a regal lady. She even talked about her night spent in a brothel (for research) on the Late Show recently.

LOVE RANCH is set in the late '70s and tells the story of Grace Bontempo (Mirren) and Charlie Bontempo (Pesci), the husband and wife owner/operators of Nevada's first legal brothel. Their lives take a turn when Armando Bruza, a heavyweight boxer (Sergio Peris–Mencheta) from South America, is brought to train at the Ranch, and an unforeseen love triangle develops that ends in murder.

Armando Bruza is also introduced to some of the Ranch's talent. Helen Mirren is very convincing with her strawberry blond pincurls and her American accent. Pesci is doing Pesci and it's brilliance as usual. This looks like it could be very good.

LOVE RANCH also stars Gina Gershon, Bryan Cranston, Taryn Manning, Scout Taylor-Compton, Elise Neal, and Bai Ling. The film is directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker (and Mirren's husband) Taylor Hackford (THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE, RAY) and will see a limited release on June 30th.
