  • Weitz following up TWILIGHT with THE GARDENER

Chris Weitz is becoming one of the biggest names in Hollywood. His latest film, NEW MOON, brought in hundreds of millions for Summit Entertainment and made the hearts of teenage girls flutter with excitement. According to Deadline Hollywood, Weitz is looking to partner with Summit Entertainment on a smaller indie film called THE GARDENER. More information follows after the jump.

Even if it wasn't for his involvement with the most polarizing franchise in history, Chris Weitz is an interesting filmmaker. His body of work as a director is pretty varied, as he gained fame with the Hugh Grant picture ABOUT A BOY and adapted the controversial yet popular you adult series THE GOLDEN COMPASS. Recently, he directed the latest installment in the massively popular Twilight franchise.

What's next for this guy then? THE GARDENER is described as an independent film which follows, "a man who drives from East L.A. to manicure the lawns of the  upscale, while trying to keep his son away from gangs and immigration agents."  Demian Bichir is attached to play the title role, who you might recognize from his role in Soderbergh's CHE as Fidel Castro.

This picture sounds interesting to say the least, as it appears to tackle one of the more prevalent issues in contemporary political discourse- immigration. Instead of taking a documentary angle, this film will strive to put a human face on newcomers to the American dream. Honestly, it sounds a lot like an independent film from a few years back called UNDER THE SAME MOON which dealt with similar topics and tugged on more than a few heart strings.
