“Who watches the Watchmen?” puns may not be over. WATCHMEN 2 coming?
This story may not be clearer or more discernible than a Rorschach test right now, but it is interesting nonetheless. Here goes…
Paul Levitz, former president and publisher of DC Comics, believed it sacrilegious to speak the words “sequel,” “prequel” or “spin-off” when it came to WATCHMEN. Apparently, he found it disrespectful to the graphic novel’s creators Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons (despite their falling-out), as a sequel could potentially cause a “very bad feeling in the creative community” and is, not to mention, “a creatively bankrupt move.” Out steps Levitz and in steps DC’s senior vice president Dan Didio, who does not quite share the same outlook on the WATCHMEN.
Those three previously unspoken words could be like a symphony to Didio ears…or perhaps they just sound more like “cha-ching.” It is rumored that the veeps is thinking “multiple prequel comic miniseries and spinoff ongoing projects” and considers this a pet project. And of course, along with that could come the possibility of more graphic novels, more video games, and (gasp) maybe even a WATCHMEN Saturday morning cartoon?
As the story’s source points out, Didio would have to get through Moore and Gibbons first, as they have first refusal rights. But judging on how Moore has disconnected himself from DC, and any film tied to one of his books, I don’t foresee this being a high hurdle to jump over.
Now, as previously stated, this is all just speculation but it still breeds an interesting conversation. Would you watch, or read, the WATCHMEN 2.0? Sorry, everyone else was doing one. I had to join the pun party.
