Willem Dafoe says JOHN CARTER OF MARS starts shooting next week!
While promoting his latest film DAYBREAKERS, Willem Dafoe said Disney’s JOHN CARTER OF MARS blasts off next week, as the film will begin shooting in London. The film, from WALL-E director Andrew Stanton, is based off Edgar Rice Burroughs’ sci-fi series of the same name for which there were 11 books. Burroughs’ was most noted for his long running Tarzan novel series, which lasted from 1912 till 3 years before his death in 1947.
JOHN CARTER tells the story of an immortal man and former Civil War soldier who, after dying in a cave while hiding from Indians, finds his soul transported to Mars where he embodies a similar yet stronger form. Stronger than who, you ask? Why the natives of Mars, of course! Which is exactly who Dafoe will play. A 10-foot tall, four armed Martian named Tars Tarkas, that is. Carter will be played by Taylor Kitsch, who you may have seen in last year’s WOLVERINE as Gambit. The film also stars another WOLVERINE alumnus, Lynn Collins, who will star as Carter’s hottie Dejah Thoris. Thomas Haden Church, Mark Strong, Dominic West, James Purefoy and Samantha Morton co-star.
Despite Stanton’s past projects with Disney and Pixar, Dafoe says that his character will be made up of practical effects and prosthetics. “It’s not like some people’s fantasies where they put you in a room and they sample you and they go off and they do this computer magic, and no one ever plays a scene — it’s not like that. We’re going to play these scenes.”
