ZOMBIELAND screenwriters discuss their plans for G.I. JOE sequel
After the success that was ZOMBIELAND, screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were hired to draft some pretty notable projects. One being the DEADPOOL spin-off/reboot and the other being the sequel to G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA. Their involvement being the only reason I have any kind of moderate hope or excitement for this film at all.
Reese and Wernick recently spoke to MTV about the sequel and some of their ideas for where the story would go now that Cobra has risen (despite the fact that the actual "rise" only comprised about 5 minutes of the film).
Check out what the dynamic duo had to say after the jump!
On if their sequel will pay respects to the first film, Reese said “We can say that we will be faithful to the first film,” adding “We will not be ignoring events from the first in the second.” Wernick went on to add that “It will be a sequel,” and “It will be a continuation of G.I. JOE [as it was established last summer].”
In response to the scope of the film compared to the first, Reese stated “It’s hard to think of it being any bigger; that was a big movie,” adding “They blew up a lot of stuff. We hope for it to be as fun, that the characters really pop. We’ll be introducing some new characters.”
And on the topic of new characters and subsequent R& D, Wernick told of a little "work " trip they will soon be taking. “We’re going out to Pawtucket, Rhode Island to the Hasbro headquarters next week,” adding "[We’ll] talk to the toy guys, take a tour of the facility, see all the old toys, the new toys and just get inspired.”
In respects of what they hope to bring to the table, “We’re going to be open to what they have, and we’re presenting them with what we have; it will be a meeting of the minds,” Reese said of the early stages their in on the film's plot. “This is a dream come true. If I could get in a time machine and go tell my 11-year-old self this he’d be dancing, running through the street doing cartwheels…G.I. JOE should be fun, it should be a ride. That’s what we feel like ZOMBIELAND was, and we hope to bring that to the G.I. JOE franchise also.”
I agree. G.I. JOE should be fun. But it is also important to note that it is possible to make a fun film while also making a good film. Knowing this is what seperated a movie like ZOMBIELAND from a movie like G.I. JOE. And knowing is half the battle!
At least these guys seem to be half way there...
