With DIE HARD, PREDATOR, and THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, director John McTiernan crafted three of the greatest American action films of the last 25 years. That's not up for discussion. Since then, he's been more miss than hit, directing such non-classics as LAST ACTION HERO, ROLLERBALL, and BASIC...ahem.

Action fans have longed for a comeback from McTiernan, and hopefully SHRAPNEL - a film scripted by hot hand Evan Daugherty about two war veterans who decide to hunt each other in a sadistic game of cat and mouse - will be the film that puts the director back on top. The script is supposedly fantastic, making the 2008 Black List - an annual list of the best scripts on the Hollywood market. Finish reading this story, after the jump.

In recent years, McTiernan has narrowly avoided jail after being sentenced to four months when he admitted to lying to the FBI about illegal wiretapping of ROLLERBALL producer Charles Roven. McTiernan paid private eye Anthony Pellicano to commit the crime - an act called conspiracy, a very serious offense in the eyes of the law. Maybe it will inspire McTiernan to come up with a new flick about the underground world of Hollywood?
