Did actor John Hawkes pass on “The Walking Dead” because of commercials?
Okay, here’s the skinny: A little while back, AMC was rumored to be considering actor John Hawkes to star in their hit series The Walking Dead as none other than The Governor, the evil sonofabitch who terrorizes our leads for a good majority of the comic series.
Following negotiations, the actor recently revealed to JoBlo the reasons that he chose to take a pass on the hit show. Hawkes said that he had “to be careful of what TV shows" he chooses, "particularly ones that have commercials in them, because it's going to be a different kind of television show." He went on to add, "There are going to be sponsors. No matter how good the show is, if there are commercials, it's going to be a different show, to me. That's just my personal feeling."
Personally, this is a bummer. While the odd quote may make for a great headline, the story here is a bit troubling. I think that Hawkes would have been one hell of a choice for The Governor, one of the best original comic characters of the past few years.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this is the type of casting that we will eventually see when season three hits, as it could be something really special.
