Alexander Skarsgard BATTLESHIP

If you didn't see enough of actor Alexander Skarsgard as the vampire sheriff Eric in last week's third season premiere of HBO's True Blood, you're about to see a lot more of him on the big screen very soon. Skarsgard has just landed the role of Taylor Kitsch's older brother in Peter Berg's sci-fi re-imagining of the Hasbro game BATTLESHIP.

In the film (due out June 18, 2012 from Universal), Skarsgard, who plays a by-the-book naval officer, will try and keep his tempestuous younger brother (Kitsch) from getting himself killed when their ship becomes part of an international fleet tasked with battling a seafaring alien armada.

With upcoming roles in the remake of STRAW DOGS and Lars Von Trier's MELANCHOLIA, Skarsgard's next few projects are firmly rooted in more genre-based fare which is good to see, especially when his fan base is used to seeing him vamping out and/or engaging in various forms of speed-sex erotica (refer to True Blood). He also came just a thunderbolt short of starring as the lead in Marvel's THOR, narrowly losing out to Chris Hemsworth. Before long, it looks like fans of Skarsgard will be able to choose between watching the actor on Sunday evenings on cable, or at the movies on date night!
