With production on THE DARK KNIGHT RISES now officially underway, so comes the viral campaign we all knew was likely to start sooner or later. Well, here it is sooner than later. You may recall the marketing team at Warner Bros. outdoing themselves with THE DARK KNIGHT's viral campaign and all of its Joker-themed antics so, needless to say, they've got their work cut out for them if they want to top that (seeing how this is reportedly the final film in this respective trilogy and all.)

And they're off to a good start...at least I think they are, even though no one is quite sure exactly what "it" is. With the official launch of www.thedarkknightrises.com, people began to attempt to decipher what exactly the mysterious audio was saying, if anything, as it played over the blank black splash page. One audio-capable SuperHeroHype reader discovered that the audio was a repetitive chant of "The Fire Rises."

This was discovered to be a Twitter hashtag and Twitter account (#TheFireRises and @TheFireRises), by which tweeting added your picture to a growing collage of Twitter avatars on www.thedarkknightrises.com/image.html, which appeared to be creating some kind of tiled mosaic image (now revealed to be our first look at Tom Hardy as Bane).

So right out of the gate, we have our first photo of one of the film's villains. Seems like a pretty good start to what is sure to be a fun filled, nerd scavenger hunt leading us to the film's release on July 20th, 2012. Stay tuned to Gordon and the Whale for this developing story.

Check out your first look at Tom Hardy as Bane after the break.
