Andrea Arnold casts James Howson as her Heathcliff for WUTHERING HEIGHTS
While she has become one of today’s most interesting filmmakers, Andrea Arnold has been able to make her upcoming take on the legendary novel Wuthering Heights one of the more secretive productions going on at this point.
Well, now we finally have at least a little bit of news.
One of the bigger blank spots on the film’s production slate has been the role of Heathcliff, which until today has been uncast. Now, according to the Daily Mail (via Bleeding Cool), unknown actor James Howson will not only take on the role, but will be the first black actor to play the character on screen.
Casting for the character has been going on since February, and he will now join actress Kaya Scodelario and Nichola Burley as the only two other characters cast. Scodelario will play Cathy. The film will be based on a script by GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING scribe Olivia Hetreed, and will be Arnold’s follow up to her brilliant 2009 release, FISH TANK.
Personally, while I’m not familiar with Howson’s work, I do have to say, no one works better with unknown actors than Arnold. She was able to take another unknown, Katie Jarvis, and make her an absolute star with FISH TANK, so hopefully the same can be said for this film. This film is going to be one hell of a project.
