One of the more compelling stories this week has been the ongoing development of a brand new project for one Angelina Jolie.

Originally thought of as a new starring vehicle for the beloved thespian, we found out yesterday that the actress will instead be writing and directing a new film, surrounding a love story set during the early stages of the Bosnian/Yugoslavian war.

Well, thanks to an interview with the Serbian paper, Blic (via The Playlist), we also know that the film will feature Croatian actor Rade Sebedzija, who was apparently convinced to join the project after reading Jolie’s screenplay. The screenplay apparently follows (and spoilers ahead) "...a love story about a young Serb and a Muslim woman who fell in love several evenings before beginning of war in Bosnia. That’s how film begins. Then follows war madness. The action follows war events with young Muslim woman ending up in a Serbian concentration camp from where she is somehow saved by the young Serb. Their love becomes passionate but impossible."

Personally, while I was excited for this film from the outset, with or without Jolie directing it, I can’t help but have even more excitement knowing that she is. I think that the premise sounds massively compelling, and the idea of Jolie writing and directing her debut feature around such a powerful topic is really compelling.

And apparently, this has been in the works for some time, as the film starts production on September 3, according to reports. What do you think of this news?

A very exciting project but also very, very risky. Beyond the technical and artistic merits of the film, it will be closely scrutinized for its handling of the highly emotional political issues surrounding the war. People will also be trying to decipher if Jolie is expressing her political views through the film. And then there is the challenge of selling a movie starring relative unknowns. The story is compelling and I certainly hope it succeeds but Jolie chose a path strewn with land mines for her first project.
