James Franco Rise of the Apes

While 20thCentury Fox may have their eyes on a different A-lister, it looks as though they are getting their ducks in a row just in case one Natalie Portman doesn’t hop aboard their upcoming Ridley Scott-directed ALIEN prequel.

Bloody Disgustingis reporting that Anne Hathaway and James Franco are both in the running to take up the film’s lead role, if Portman decides to go a different way.

Now, the addition of Hathaway is no real shock, as an actress of her caliber would be in the running for just about any project, but what is in fact interesting is the addition of Franco’s name. Apparently Fox and Scott are more than ready to go the route of having a male lead, if in fact no big name female thespian decides the film is worth joining.

For those of you who have been following the film’s production, Fox’s interest in a bankable star should come as no shock, as Scott and Fox have been at war over the film’s potential $200 million budget, and subsequent R-rating. Personally, this would be a wise move for a studio who would love to make back a large sum of its money, and with two really talented thespians, why the hell not.

I don’t know how fans of the franchise would feel having a male lead, and while I myself may have an issue with a female-led franchise shifting over to being spearheaded by a male, James Franco would definitely make me interested in the film. But then again, so would Hathaway or Portman, so this is overall a win-win.
