Aquisitions: Magnolia picks up JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI; Red Flag nabs WE WERE HERE
With most of the film world focusing on trailers and casting news, a few films have finally found a home distribution-wise.
First up, Deadline is reporting that Magnolia Pictures have nabbed up the North American rights to the David Gelb-directed documentary, JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI.
The film follows the story of master sushi chef Jiro Ono, and looks at the man’s life and work. It made its bow at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, to solid reviews. It should fit perfectly on the always well-varied slate that Magnolia plans, and is definitely a documentary release that will be interesting to check out once it finds a release date.
In other distribution news, Red Flag Releasing has announced (via Deadline) that they will be releasing the David Weissman film, WE WERE HERE. Co-directed by Weissman and Bill Weber, the film premiered at Sundance earlier this year, and is a documentary that looks “back at the impact of the AIDS epidemic in San Francisco when it was first identified 30 years ago this year.” I have not seen the film, but it does definitely sound interesting, and it sounds like a documentary that will definitely be worth checking out.
