Audio-Free Trailer: I DON’T KNOW HOW SHE DOES IT

There are certain films that I know a lot about through osmosis - I never intentionally seek out information on these films, but boom, I've got it. Douglas McGrath's I DON'T KNOW HOW SHE DOES IT is a prime example of that. Thanks to gossip blogs posting set pictures just to show off Sarah Jessica Parker's wardrobe, I know that the film is about a working mom spread way too thin. How does she do it? I suspect that, from the outside, things look great, but on the inside? Maybe a bit too crazed. Oh, also? The film is based on a book whose jacket I read once. Full disclosure!

I'm suspecting that I DON'T KNOW HOW SHE DOES IT isn't going to break too many barriers - I can already foresee shades of THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA and THE NANNY DIARIES, "fun" novels-turned-films about some tough choices that need to be made when personal desires and professional strivings bump up against each other. Given such a seemingly basic plot, it's only natural that we go the Audio-Free route in search of deeper meanings. After the break, check out the first trailer for the film, along with my off-the-cuff (and sometimes without-a-brain) remarks on it.

Our heroine gets to wake up in bed with Greg Kinnear, but at 4:24AM. Take that bitter with the sweet, girlfriend. She does look, admittedly, harried and tired - cue the running. Is she an insomniac? No! An obsessive list-maker who can't seem to break away from all of those little "to-dos." This film is actually speaking to me so far.

I think we can all agree that the common theme of this trailer is "running." SJP is running everywhere, but she doesn't look quite "present," well, anywhere. Uh oh. I was wrong. The theme is time. As in, SJP just "stopped" it and is now explaining her situation to us. Sigh. I've checked out. It feels like a cheap effect and I'm already cringing imagining how many times it will be employed in the film.

It's the inevitable "trying to be sexy and falling asleep" scene! Paint by those numbers! More running. Olivia Munn. Professional intrigue. Falling asleep (me). Pierce Brosnan! Ah, how could I be so silly to think that it was enough to put personal and professional life at odds - we also need romantic complications.

Crying. Lice. Wow, this is just...it's a lot. And none of it is moving me. Complications, complications, complications.

So there were a lot of complications. But the best ones? The emotional ones. SJP leaving behind her kids to travel for business? That's the good stuff. SJP with her skirt over her head in front of Brosnan? Not so much. I want the meat, not the fluff.

I DON'T KNOW HOW SHE DOES IT opens on September 16.
