Banksy’s Oscar “response” is a fake!

INSIDE JOB ended up winning Best Documentary at the 2011 Oscars, disappointing many who felt that Banksy's graffiti art doc EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP deserved the prize. Recently, the above image of a little girl playing with the golden statuette appeared on a wall in Weston, UK - which just so happens to be the home turf of the elusive artist.

It was originally thought that this might be Banksy's reaction revealed in art form to losing the award, but it looks like it might be a fake. First off, the image of the little girl has been used before by Banksy and it is not like the artist to repeat images. The rat that he was originally most known for, for example, was always seen in different poses or holding a sign with different phrases like "So little to much time".

The fact that it's probably a fake only reaffirms the point that EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP made: if the process of street art is easy to copy, then the original movement and images of the artist lose their meaning. Just like the picture project from Parisian artist JR, the idea of street art has expanded to include everyone and not just the artists that originally started the fly-by-night movement in the first place.

If the above image is just a random fan who went to Kinko's in the middle of the night, it's almost preferable to the real thing, because it only proves Banksy's point.

What do you get out of this picture?
