Barbra Streisand to star in musical adaptation, GYPSY
Apparently Barbra Streisand is looking to jump back into the world of actually interesting films.
Last seen in LITTLE FOCKERS, the NY Times have confirmed, and also in a way denied, a report from the NY Post, which originally revealed that the actress was in negotiations to star in, produce and direct an adaptation of the Broadway musical, Gypsy.
However, the author of the show Arthur Laurents has gone over to the NY Times and confirmed that the film is indeed in the works, but that Streisand will only be starring in the upcoming project.
This will be the second take cinematically on the musical, after a 1962 film starring Rosalind Russell. The story follows a mother, Rose (Streisand), who hopes to turn her daughters into stars. The musical is considered one of the greatest stage musicals ever created, and features lyrics penned by Stephen Sondheim, with music composed by Jule Styne.
Personally, I absolutely adore this idea. I’ve been kind of on a musical kick lately, which has culminated in many nights of wishing and hoping that we will be getting a good film musical sometime soon. It’s been a really long time since we’ve seen a truly special film musical, and hopefully this may be that. A project that is an absolute soft lob down Streisand’s zone, and one that she’d likely knock out of the damn ball park.
