So, with Ben Affleck passing on both SUPERMAN and TALES FROM THE GANGSTER SQUAD, WB has been able to find a director to take over SUPERMAN (Zack Snyder), but they have yet to find someone to nab up the reins of GANGSTER SQUAD.

Apparently with Darren Aronofsky not too keen on taking up the project, as he’ll more than likely be busy working on WOLVERINE 2 (which seems to be only days away from an announcement), WB has collected a list of directors they are looking at to helm the film, and it’s one hell of an interesting, if a little scatterbrained, list.

Latino Review is reporting that Francis Lawrence, Paul Greengrass, Scott Cooper, Greg Berlanti and Martin Campbell have all been named by the studio as possible directors for the project. Hit the jump for the full story.

Personally, my first choice would have to be the most interesting addition to the list, CRAZY HEART director Scott Cooper. His low key visual style, yet sense for setting and true ability at giving us compelling characters and character development, which would fit this 1940s-era cop drama really well. Sure, Paul Greengrass is an interesting choice, and would make for a rather visually intriguing take on the genre and era, something similar to Michael Mann’s PUBLIC ENEMIES, but just with shaky cam, but I would have to hope that the studio hands this over to Cooper.

Berlanti isn’t a compelling choice, particularly after seeing something like his ABC show No Ordinary Family, and while his latest directorial effort LIFE AS WE KNOW IT hasn’t been as maligned as the trailers would make you think, I just don’t find him as a choice all that intriguing. Frances Lawrence is in a similar boat, with Martin Campbell seeming like the most sure-fire choice that the studio could make. Campbell would be the less interesting choice, but would make a really compelling film, so hopefully the reins are given to either Cooper or Campbell.
