Very few films have seen the type of gestation that the long-talked about remake of the classic THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY.

While names like Ron Howard and Steven Spielberg have all come and gone, an even larger number of leading men have seen the lead role, and ultimately jumped from the project. Jim Carrey, Mike Meyers, Sacha Baron Cohen, and even Will Ferrell have all tried to take on the role of Mitty, a man who lives a rather timid life, but ultimately expands his reach by living a various collection of fantasy lives. However, yet another name has cropped up.

Deadline is reporting that Ben Stiller is set to take on the lead role, with a script from THE WEATHER MAN scribe Steve Conrad.  However, the film has also lost a director. Gore Verbinski will no longer be directing the film, leaving the seat wholly vacant.

The remake has been in the works for what seems like decades now, at it ultimately doesn’t appear as though it’s any different this time. Personally, I’m a fan of the original film, but this is the perfect project to remake. Stiller definitely adds a bit of interest to the project, but without a director, I wouldn’t get my hopes too high if I were you. Hopefully this time the film can actually get made.
