Well, with the start of a new year comes the start of a new festival circuit, and it looks like Berlin wants to take the early headlines.

Sundance may be just a few weeks away, but next month brings us the Berlin Film Festival, and it looks like this year’s Berlinale will be quite an impressive one. The festival hasn’t announced its lineup for Berlinale proper yet, but we do have the Panorama sidebar lineup, and it’s one hell of a collection of films.

The most intriguing film on the list has to be Lee Tamahori’s upcoming autobiography of Latif Yahia, an Iraqi lieutenant who is ultimately blackmailed into becoming the body double for Uday Hussein. The film, entitled THE DEVIL’S DOUBLE, stars Dominic Cooper and Ludivine Sagnier, and while Tamahori hasn’t had the best track record of late (particularly his take on XXX 2), it does sound like one hell of a film.

Director Jose Padilha will also premiere his next film, ELITE SQUAD 2 – THE ENEMY WITHIN, which plays sequel to his Golden Bear-winning film, 2008’s ELITE SQUAD.  Abe Sylvia will debut DIRTY GIRL, which stars Milla Jovovich and Juno Temple, and one of the more interesting documentaries is THE ADVOCATE FOR FAGDOM, which features interviews with Gus Van Sant, John Waters, and Bruce LaBruce.

Overall, if this sidebar is any sign, Berlin 2011 looks to be an impressive festival. Here’s the full Panorama lineup:
