BEYOND GAY, a quasi-sequel to HUMPDAY

Mumblecore director Lynn Shelton's latest effort, HUMPDAY (now on DVD), is a look at what happens when two men, vastly different in personality, reach the same point in their life. The dreaded quarter-life crisis. So, naturally, these two best friends, played by Mark Duplass and Joshua Leonard, do what any two heterosexual males would do...they decide to make a porno...together.

The idea all starts with the mention of an experimental art festival of sorts called HUMP!, in which people submit amateur pornography. Being that HUMP! was the inspiration for the idea behind film, festival founder Dan Savage demanded that Shelton pay her dues. Shelton in turn created BEYOND GAY, a sequel of sorts to HUMPDAY in short film form.

With a 5-minute runtime, BEYOND GAY chronicles a lesbian woman and a gay man as they attempt to work up the nerve to have sex with each other for no good reason other than just to do it.

“It was my first time at HUMP! and the experience was kind of extraordinary,” Shelton said. “Sure, it’s kind of uncomfortable to watch porn with a bunch of strangers but it also felt like this really sweet, really fun celebration of the diversity and complexity of human sexuality. Everyone laughed their heads off at BEYOND GAY, which was awesome and I was completely honored to take home the prize for Funniest porn. I have to say that winning HUMP! also felt like the completion of a weird and beautiful circle.”
