Ratings: Film – 3/5, Tech specs – 3/5, Packaging and extras – 2.5/5, Overall – 3/5

Movie:
Despite any feelings you may have about this remake, Platinum Dunes does tend to bring something new to the table while still staying true to the formula that made their predecessors the classics they became.

The 2010 NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET featured a Freddy Kreuger that isn't nearly as whimsical and lighthearted (if you can call the monster that is Freddy lighthearted of course) as Robert Englund's famous version. Jackie Earl Haley's Freddy is much more vengeful, and the remake does more to explain why Freddy Kreuger is after these kids than the original film does.

Tech Specs:
Solid picture quality is very good presented in a 2.40:1 aspect ration. Colors are vibrant, and any shot of Freddy Kreugers face with even a little bit of light on it really bring life to character beyond his peformance.

This is a modern horror movie so of course it has jump scares. Those jump scares are dependent on solid quality of sound which this disc does have. The score plays with a touch of subtlety throughout the film and even the small sounds like the sharpening of the claws on Kreugers glove come through excellently.

Packaging and extras:
Packaged in a slim standard case that features an additional Digital Copy disc for transfer to a Mac or PC.

"Freddy Kreuger Reborn" is an all encompassing look behind the scenes look at the making of the film that totals about 14 minutes. Three deleted scenes including an alternate opening and alternate ending are also featured extras on this disc.

Overall:
Platinum Dunes has a reputation for bringing new life to some of the classic horror films of the past and this is another solid film in that lineup. An argument could be made as to whether or not these films should even be remade. However, the differences between Jackie Earl Haley and Robert Englund's portrayals of Freddy Kreuger do put a new perspective on the classic slasher and make this an overall enjoyable film.

As a blu ray, it would have been nice to see a little bit more behind the scenes, and it would have been interesting to see more of Jackie Earl Haley's perspective on taking on one of the more famous roles in the horror genre. Overall though, a fan of horror and certainly any fan of Platinum Dunes productions should add this to a collection.

OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS:

Five teenage friends living on one street all dream of a sinister man with a disfigured face, a frightening voice and a gardener’s glove with knives for fingers. But when one among them dies, they soon realize that what happens in their dreams happens for real and the only way to stay alive is to stay awake. Buried in their past is a debt that has just come due. To save themselves, they must plunge into the mind of the most twisted nightmare of all: Freddy Krueger. Jackie Earle Haley plays the legendary evildoer in this contemporary reimagining of the seminal horror classic.
