Like it or not, the era of the Iraq War movie is upon us. While most of the previous films to tackle this topic chose to focus on specific aspects of the war, and how it affected American soldiers, no film had really come along trying to pass itself off as a simple popcorn flick with broad appeal, until GREEN ZONE. Unlike the previous films STOP-LOSS and THE HURT LOCKER, Paul Greengrass takes America's eventual skepticism over the existence of Iraqi WMD and places it in the context of an action-packed war thriller in GREEN ZONE.

With Matt Damon playing the part of Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller, Greengrass manages to combine the look and feel of his BOURNE movies, with a new setting. Instead of Jason Bourne trying to unravel mysteries of his past that coincide with global conspiracies, Roy Miller stands as a frustrated soldier, tired of following bogus leads on his mission to find Iraq's WMD.  As he goes further and further off-script, he finds assistance in one CIA operative, played by Brendan Gleeson, and opposition from Greg Kinnear's shady politician.  With one goal in mind, Miller does whatever it takes to accomplish his mission, even with stout political resistance, as well as the obvious Iraqi resistance.  Whether you're looking for a political thriller or an action-packed war flick, GREEN ZONE should have enough of what you're looking for to keep you happy.

The film translates well to Blu-ray, with the exception of a few scenes in low light, where the grain is distractingly obvious in this high resolution format.  Aside from those few scenes, the movie's frantic, shaky, handheld cam feel comes through in great quality.

For the 2-Disc Limited Edition Blu-Ray, GREEN ZONE offers a few deleted scenes, including a couple of scenes that dig a little deeper into some of the story elements that are glazed over in the film itself, a Matt Damon centered feature about working with actual soldiers to make GREEN ZONE more authentic, as well as the typical studio-made feature that you're sure to see on the TV Guide channel or in some doctor's office some day.  Some of the material is redundant if you've taken advantage of the U-Control features like the picture-in-picture Behind the Scenes or the video commentary with Damon and Greengrass, both of whom look extremely bored and/or tired, however, they still manage to provide interesting commentary on the production and actors that were involved.  The second disc offers you a free digital copy of the movie.  If you like the work of Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass, GREEN ZONE is not to be missed.
