SHORTS blu-ray

If it’s a movie review you’re looking for, check out my theatrical review of SHORTS HERE!

Blu-ray Rating: 8/10

New on Blu-ray and standard DVD, SHORTS is a tall tale in short form about what happens when humans have the power to literally get anything they want. As these tales go, things never end up good for us greedy humans!

The film is the latest effort from do-it-all director Robert Rodriguez, who dabbles in both the violent, gritty action films (SIN CITY, PLANET TERROR) and the occasional kids' films (SPY KIDS, THE ADVENTURES OF SHARK BOY AND LAVA GIRL). As I noted in my theatrical review, “SHORTS is a movie for kids by a filmmaker who knows how to make appealing, crowd-pleasing films, no matter the age.” The case is no different when it comes to the Blu-ray edition of SHORTS, as Rodriguez includes a few fun, yet informative special features for kids who are into the process of filmmaking. In short, it’s fun for the whole family!

“The Magic of SHORTS”
Rodriguez, the cast and few of the visual FX artists take us behind the scenes of SHORTS, revealing just how they pulled off some of the fantastical scenes in the film. Find out just how they made walking crocodiles, super stretch arms, and the giant booger monster. With a director like Rodriguez who uses CGI so much, it is interesting to see how still he incorporates practical FX into his films.

“SHORTS Show & Tell”
Get a behind-the-scenes look at some of the crazy antics that occurred on set from the film’s short stars, as they are given handheld camera and turned loose to interview one another. It is apparent through this just how much fun Rodriguez is as a director and how much fun his movies can be, both in watching and in making!

“Ten Minute Cooking School: Chocolate Chip Volcano Cookies”
A staple of a Robert Rodriguez DVD, the director continues his on-going “Ten Minute Cooking School” series, which can be found on most DVD versions of his films. Just don’t watch this one hungry, or with your persuasive kids, as you will surely find yourself watching SHORTS and baking what look to be delicious cookies at the same time!

“Ten Minute Film School: SHORT SHORTS”
Yet another staple of Rodriguez’s DVDs, this edition of “Ten Minute Film School” is aimed at all those young, future filmmakers out there. Here the director, and author of the guerilla filmmaking handbook “Rebel Without A Crew,” shows all you up and comings just how you can make a cheap, yet epic film with the equipment and locations you have around you. Rodriguez even gives us a look into his process of first putting the pieces of the puzzle together as he begins pre-production. Surprisingly, it is very bare bones…well, except for the giant CG robot of course!

As a side note, it is great to see a director who still enjoys making films for the pure fun of it, and even encourages his kids to participate. After all SHORTS, SPY KIDS, and SHARK BOY AND LAVA GIRL were all ideas that originated with Rodriguez’s sons. After seeing this, I am currently lobbying for Rodriguez to adopt me as his son. Never mind the fact that I am almost 25.

This is by far the best feature on the SHORTS DVD, as well as a must watch for any kids who love to make movies. When they say “don’t try this at home,” they are definitely not referring to this special feature!
